National Transport University Presented the RailSilience Project at ErasmusDays 2026

On 13 October 2026, representatives of the National Transport University (NTU) took part in ErasmusDays 2026 events dedicated to the implementation of EU Erasmus+ projects under martial law in Ukraine. During a webinar focused on Jean Monnet projects, the international educational and research initiative RailSilience was presented. The initiative aims to develop railway interoperability between Ukraine and the European Union, harmonise safety legislation, and implement best practices for enhancing railway resilience.

The project “EU–Ukraine Railway Interoperability in the Context of Harmonisation of Safety Legislation and Implementation of Best Resilience Practices” (RailSilience) is implemented under the Jean Monnet action of the Erasmus+ programme. Its main objective is to strengthen Ukraine’s integration into the European transport area by deepening knowledge of EU transport policy, railway safety and interoperability legislation, and practices for improving the resilience of transport systems.

The project is particularly important in the context of the full-scale war, when ensuring the continuity of railway services, managing risks, adapting infrastructure to crisis situations, and restoring the transport system are essential prerequisites for economic stability and Ukraine’s further European integration.

Key Areas of the Project

RailSilience combines educational, research, and practical activities. Its key objectives include developing an interdisciplinary Jean Monnet teaching module, fostering dialogue on the implementation of EU law in the railway sector, and conducting applied research.

The research component will focus on identifying areas of alignment and gaps between Ukrainian and EU legislation on railway interoperability and safety, as well as designing practices for ensuring railway resilience during wartime. The findings will help inform the future restoration of transport infrastructure.

The project also предусматривает student and academic conferences, round-table discussions with representatives of Ukrzaliznytsia, academia, and business, training for railway-sector professionals, and guest lectures delivered by Ukrainian and European lecturers.

An important priority will be disseminating research findings among transport-sector professionals, government representatives, educators, students, and the wider public.

The RailSilience team comprises researchers and early-career scholars from the National Transport University with expertise in transport safety, transport process management, railway digitalisation, and international research cooperation.

The implementation of RailSilience will contribute to strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, developing the competencies of current and future transport professionals, and building a research-based foundation for harmonising railway legislation and enhancing the resilience of Ukraine’s transport infrastructure.

Participation in ErasmusDays 2026 provided an opportunity to get to know the National Erasmus+ Office in Ukraine, present the project’s objectives and key areas of activity, foster professional dialogue, and  engagement with other initiatives under the Erasmus+ programme.
