PhDs EU-Rail: Railway Digitalization Research Results Presented at TRANSBALTICA 2026
On 17–18 September 2026, the 17th International Scientific Conference “TRANSBALTICA 2026: Transportation Science and Technology” was held in Vilnius. The conference was organised by the Faculty of Transport Engineering of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH).
Oleksandr Rohovyi, a PhD student, took part in the conference and presented the results of his research in a presentation entitled:
“Digitalization of Railway Transportation as a Self-Organization Tool for Decarbonization: A Multicriteria Optimization Approach.”
The research results were presented within the framework of the international project “PhDs EU-Rail: Extending the Rail Network of PhDs in Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking”
(Call: HORIZON-ER-JU-2023-EXPLR-05).
The project aims to develop the professional and research competences of the new generation of railway transport researchers, strengthen cooperation between the academic community and the railway industry, and facilitate the integration of young researchers into the European research environment.
The topic of the presented research is closely aligned with the key objectives of the project, particularly the development of innovative approaches to the digitalization of railway transport, improving its efficiency, and supporting decarbonization.
Digitalization and Decarbonization of Railway Transport
The presentation addressed the digitalization of railway transportation as an important tool for transforming the transport system and achieving decarbonization objectives. Particular attention was paid to the application of a multicriteria optimization approach, which makes it possible to simultaneously consider economic, technological, operational, and environmental criteria in decision-making processes.
The proposed approach is aimed at identifying priority areas for the digital development of railway transport while taking into account the need to improve transportation efficiency, ensure the rational use of resources, and reduce the environmental impact of transport.
Oleksandr Rohovyi’s participation in TRANSBALTICA 2026 provided an opportunity to present the research findings to the international scientific community, receive professional feedback, and establish new academic contacts.
Participation of PhD students in international scientific conferences is an important component of the implementation of PhDs EU-Rail. It contributes to the development of young researchers, strengthens international cooperation, and supports the integration of Ukrainian research into the European research and innovation space in the field of railway transport.
